14 Jul 06 - Back to shackles?

July 14th, 2006

The Corner: Back to shackles?

They have been digging up the streets laying new power lines throughout the city. Schools are opening up as fast as we can finish them and more police have come into the city. What better news than that. The army has grown and I don’t think we are to far away from giving up more of the country to the Iraqi government. We where told most of the south was just handed over to there control as the police and army are in place and the cities have gotten things up and running. The areas of the city were we can get the insurgent to stop destroying the stuff we put in for the people are flourishing. You can walk the streets and see the vendors and small business men doing business as usual. Entire mall areas are open and some nice restaurants have opened to the public. Entire streets are crowded with vendors and buyers. Market squares are almost impassable. When we enter many of the houses now they have full channels and satellite dishes. They were watch MTV in one house another was listening to some rapper guy all the troops know. We are starting to see cars that have the big chrome wheels and everyone has cell phones it seems. Yea these are the people that we are destroying their cultural ways by being insensitive to their beliefs. Hmmm. This is starting to look just like Baharia or Dubai or any of the other 30 countries or so around this world I have been to that have freedom of choice. The only thing they fear here is what we fear in America, terrorist attacks now, oh and that we will leave to soon. So I have decided when I get back I will protest the protestors! The civilian me not the Marine me. Because anyone protesting us, must want women put back into a form of male dominated slavery, people scared to voice their opinions, and the questions raised to government answered with death or an arm. I thought about it as I talked to one of our interpreters from Baghdad. Who would tell him that due to our protestors we have decided to release Saddam and put him back in power. That all women must walk covered up, want to or not, without saying a word or dare a beating or stoning. That he must either be a baathist or fear who will kick down his door in the night. That anything he says again could lead to his torture or death, depends how the local guy feels that day. Oh and I really feel bad for the soccer team as they did not win the world cup this year. What would Uday have to say? Anyways Sammy starting next week, due to a lot of protestors who have never been here or lived a day in your shoes, we are turning it all back. Here do you want to borrow my shackles I won’t need them anymore as I am leaving.

The Daily Corner.
Well we are creeping up on the middle of July. Actually it will be the middle in a few more minutes. The sun continues to pick up in temperature here with no sight of letting up. I can imagine when we get home it will feel twice as cold as it actually is after our bodies have gotten so use to this heat. I was thinking after this place that after every time I get rained on back home I will take a shower as I have no doubt the rain clouds over there must be the sweat we are giving up into the atmosphere here. I actually thought I was having a drink with my wife the other day it was so hot. Then as I rubbed the sweat out of my eyes I noticed the hair was gray, it was the company Gunny. Ok time to go in the shade and cool down to about 110.

The Marines are doing great morale is good and they are busy as ever. Busy is good as it makes time fly by and does not allow the insurgents to dictate the terms to us. It has been slow as of late so I guess either they are getting the picture or planning something good. Either way we are ready for peace or war what ever the people want. What ever the voters want! The Marines are wearing out the Bow flex that we were sent by a donor through the “Give 2 The Troops” in between patrols and sleeping. Things as well as morale are up everywhere. Your letters and packages have made the difference for these Marines. Continue your push and I will be giving you the word when to stop as the cut off day will be approaching sooner than you think. The incoming boxes have slowed down as I have expected (done this 7 time now) but continue to flow at a good rate so it isn’t too much, but we are not in need either. The cases of boot insoles came at a good time as most of the ones in the boots are worn out from all the mileage with so much gear. Got to save those knees and shins might need them later in life.
